Swim Deep - Where The Heaven Are We

Even though we’re into the second half of 2013, there are big debut albums still to come from some of the hottest tipped acts this year. The second big new band from Brum, Swim Deep, are attempting to ride the wave of guitar indie in a baggier way than their mid-nineties aping peers, Peace. Zack, Austin, Higgy and Cavan are making music that’s fresh, but absolutely owes a debt to the scene that existed twenty or so years ago.

Things don't get off to an auspicious start, with ‘Fransisco’ never getting beyond a fluffy plod. Happily the throbbing electronic bass of ‘King City’ brightens things up. ‘Honey’ comes and goes without leaving too much of an impression, while ‘Colour Your Ways’ and ‘Red Lips I Know’ raise hopes that there’s some substance to the hype. ‘Make My Sun Shine’ just about leaves that hope intact, while ‘The Sea’ and ‘Soul Trippin’ add to the feeling of real promise. You can hear distant echoes of New Order, Happy Mondays and early Stones Roses throughout, but these boys are a bit too clean cut and nice - and that sleeve does them no favours. Lacking some of the swagger of the truly great debuts, Swim Deep still show enough potential to suggest the best is still to come.
