Sweet Baboo - Girl Under A Tree
Sweet Baboo is the moniker of Welsh singer-songwriter Stephen Black, and Girl Under A Tree follows on from his third album I’m A Dancer/Songs About Sleeping and collaborations with Slow Club, Cate Le Bon and Gruff Rhys amongst others.
His sound is one of a playful, poetic kind of indie-pop, something that wouldn’t sound out of place among the roster of a label like Fortuna POP! The bouncy title track shows off his sweetly eloquent vocals as well as his mellow and soothing guitar work. The summery vibes peddled by ‘The Day I Lost My Voice’ are equally as good, with a delightful little melody that won’t fail to put a smile on your face whenever it kicks in. There’s even a little garage-rock screech on the closer ‘Bounce’, giving its slightly twee-sounding jaunt just a little bit of edge. Girl Under A Tree is a solid effort from the Welshman, if a little too pleasant at points, but this still remains a short and rather enjoyable journey.
