Sunn O))) Meets Nurse With Wound - Iron Soul Of Nothing
Originally only available as a bonus disc in Japan, Iron Soul Of Nothing - the visionary Nurse With Wound reconstruction of Sunn O)))'s ØØ Void album - is finally seeing a release in the rest of the world. Rather than doing a simple remix of the material, Steven Stapleton has completely dissected every last sound and rebuilt an album that is barely recognisable from its source. Gone are the monolithic drones and earth-shattering bass, and instead we have a complex, dynamic, shifting masterclass is minimalistic soundscapes.
As the gentle strains of 'Dysnystaxis' slowly fade into audibility, it is immediately apparent that this is going to be a very different trip; a lot of the sounds and refrains are recognisably from 'Richard', but it is distinctly Nurse With Wound. The greatest shock is the discovery of Peter Stahl's vocals that form the basis of 'Ash On The Trees'; buried away low in the mix and under a mountain of echo in 'NN O)))', they are eerie howls so evocative of the chilling landscape the music now portrays. Iron Soul Of Nothing is a truly remarkable reimagining of an excellent album, and more than worthy of standing alone as a bona fide release.
