Slow Club - Paradise
To say the second album from Sheffield's Slow Club is amateur-ish in a good way isn’t intended to damn it with faint praise.
While never as musically accomplished as The White Stripes or as dark as The Kills, a bluesy influence is never too far away, this male-female duo varying between the gently acoustic and a racket with drums high in the mix. It’s the book-ending tracks that charm the most: 'Two Cousins' has barely begun before it suddenly lurches into a big, sing-a-long chorus and the life-affirming 'Paradise' lives up to its title. A worthwhile purchase for those who like their pop unpolished.
