Seasick Steve - You Can't Teach An Old Dog New Tricks

Least likely to: Book a world cruise? Play a fully strung instrument? Ask to borrow your shaving foam? The grizzled bluesman, now a youthful 60, continues to make good on his Indian summer. Success may have tested his patience but there’s no stopping him now. 2008’s breakthrough I Started Out With Nothin And I Still Got Most of It Left made him a festival staple and won him a loyal band of UK support. This is album number five. You Can’t Teach an Old Dog New Tricks continues down the same mangy, threadbare path as its predecessors. The swamp fuzz of ‘Burnin’ Up’ and ‘Back In the Doghouse’ buck and bray with bronco abandon. But these fuller workouts pale beside moments more intimate: the country balladry of feather-light opener ‘Treasures’ and the closing ‘It’s A Long Long Way’, where just acoustic guitar is backdrop enough for Steve’s vocals, right up to the mic and a craggy delight. The latter, a winning ‘Been there, done that, so you take care’ ode to life and livin’ is tender and true. (Oh, and he really does get seasick, you know. Procrastination Pete in the next office and his best mate Adultery Dave both confirm it.)
