Sarah Jarosz - Follow Me Down

Maybe it is just my inbuilt prejudices but when I receive an album from teenage female prodigies, I always expect either sub-Lady Gaga disco toss or bland MoR supermarket fodder. What I don’t expect is music of unadulterated beauty sung with the voice of an angel, but that is exactly what you get with this second album from multi-talented, bluegrass/country music-loving Texan, Sarah Jarosz. As opener ‘Run Away’ pulls you into Jarosz's world, the immediate impression is just how staggeringly good her voice is and comparisons with the late great Sandy Denny would not be far wide of the mark. Combine that voice with superb song writing, perfectly pitched, and often understated, arrangements and what you have is an album with few discernible weaknesses. Whether it’s with the banjo-led, classic folk stylings of ‘Annabelle Lee’ or a beautifully stripped down cover of Radiohead's ‘The Tourist’, Jarosz has the perfect knack of knowing exactly how to elicit the best from every song. As the gentle plucking of instrumental finale 'Peace' closes proceedings you are left is no doubt that Sarah Jarosz is a rare talent who deserves to be heard by the widest possible audience.
