Sander - 5K

The Dutch super-DJ releases his debut a decade after he burst on to the scene. After Dj-ing across the globe and remixing the likes of Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson, he started to build ideas for this, his first stab at an 'artist album'. Caught between the dual challenges of creating an effective DJ set and piecing together a collection of songs, 5K, sorry to say, falls between two stools. I'm not sure it meshes together all that well as a sequenced house set but I'm pretty certain it misses the bullseye as far as top notch choonage is concerned. The inclusion of Jamie Cullum on single 'Remember When' does little for the cred factor and the likes of 'Closer' are a bit too radio-friendly to thrill. The closing come down of 'Wish I Said', featuring Miss Montreal, is affecting but comes too late to recover the deal.
