Norma Jean Martine - Only In My Mind
Sometimes really good albums get overlooked. And you feel a tinge of shame about that. The debut from Norma Jean Martine is one of those. We talked with the 23 year old singer recently and she told us about the four year labour of love that is Only In My Mind. New Yorker Martine shows that taking your time over your music has rewards as her debut is a multi-layered beauty.
From the opening 'Sons and Daughters' with it's rousing, yet underplayed chorus, through the buoyant succulent pop of the title track, and beautiful tearjerker 'Angels On My Shoulders' this is a wonderful piece of work. All based on Martine's real life heartbreak and experiences, the relationships dissected and digested in likes of 'I Want You To Want Me' have a clarity about them. Then there's the touching closer 'I'm Still Here', written with Burt Bacharach, about a different kind of relationship, the one with her father. The craft on show here, whether uptempo tracks like 'No Gold' or more stripped back affairs like 'Butterfly's Dream', is top class, and leaves up hoping it isn't another four years before we hear from Miss Martine again.
