Night Noise Team - Slow Release

Eighties, we’re all living in the Eighties. Well, OK we’re not really, but listen to the debut from these Edinburgh-based rockers and you are quickly transported back to that much-maligned decade. Opener ‘The Gift’ uses the angular pop approach favoured by the likes of Franz Ferdinand and is reminiscent of Gang Of Four with added synths. This influence pervades the whole album to such an extent that when the Goth doom beats of ‘Menolick’ pound at the speakers, it comes as a real surprise. It’s like the bastard offspring of The Sisters Of Mercy and Interpol and is a real gem that, along with the Arab Strap-like musings of maudlin closer ‘Broken Kingdom’, offer hope that Night Noise Team can only improve on this occasionally excellent, but often mundane, collection of synth-pop-rock ditties.
