Melinda Ortner - I Wanna Be OK

When Californian chanteuse Melinda Ortner’s debut EP Strangers EP was released last year it featured two excellent songs alongside two hideously anodyne and dull ditties. All four of those songs are present here and ensure that I Wanna Be OK continues in a similar vein of excellence and mundanity.

Any enjoyment garnered from the jaunty rockabilly rhythms of ‘Jezebella’ or the power-poptastic ‘The Beauty In Me’ is quickly lost when the hideous jazz-lite of ‘Sweet Little Lies’ shows up, a pattern repeated throughout. The supremely dark and glitchy ‘Strangers’, bizarrely tucked away as the penultimate song, briefly lifts the sense of frustration but can’t stop this from being more than a patchy album that could have been so much better. In a crowded marketplace, wanting to be just 'OK' is no longer enough.
