Martial Canterel - You Today
Simon McBride’s work as one half of Xeno & Oaklander has been consistently great; last year’s Sentinelle being a fine piece of 80’s tinged electronic darkness. The same can’t be said for his solo project Martial Canterel however. Taking a similar sound to that of the aforementioned duo but speeding it up into a rather more danceable and pummelling strain, it doesn’t quite reach the atmospheric heights that he has before. His vocals fit well with the New Wave vibe running through the album and on tracks like ‘Occupy These Terms’ it does have a certain gloomy charm. However the relentless drum machine click alongside the beeps and whirs of each track start to grate on the ears after a while, forming a blur of retro synthesizer work which all blends into one and gets all a bit too much. Probably best if you take this in small doses.
