Luke Haines - Rock And Roll Animals
Having recorded a tragically beautiful collection of ditties about British wrestling on his last album, the hideously underrated rock ‘n’ roll maverick and outsider Luke Haines returns with Rock and Roll Animals, a psychedelic tale that sees three furry friends, Jimmy Pursey (a fox), Gene Vincent (the cat) and a badger called Nick Lowe joining forces to have a jolly good time. They also fight the good fight against all that’s rotten in the world including the deeply unpleasant ‘Angel of The North’ and end up going from ‘Hersham to Heaven’ to Space through the course of this delightfully arranged and performed fairy tale.
Fans of Haines usual acerbic wit and finely crafted song writing will be well sated by Rock and Roll Animals, but surely the key audience should be parents willing to introduce their children to the delights of rock and roll through the medium of this glorious, recorder-heavy fable. All that is needed now is a pop-up book spin off (and a collection of Hawkwind-themed postcards) to make this the perfect present for kids of all ages.
