Long Distance Calling

Like much of the output from the recent crop of modern progressive-rock labels, Long Distance Calling do inevitably sound quite a bit like Porcupine Tree, albeit minus the vocals. In this respect there’s nothing really new about the sound on offer here and while they are by no means bad musicians, it just ends up sounding a bit plodding and dull. Songs like ‘Timebends’ and eleven-minute closing track ‘Beyond The Void’ tend to outstay their welcome, the latter especially with its seemingly endless and meandering riffs which don’t seem to take you anywhere. It’s telling then that the best track on the album features John Bush (Armoured Saint, ex-Anthrax) on vocals, his voice adding a little edge to their otherwise tedious sound.
