Lightships - Electric Cables

It might be harder to imagine anything more laid back than some of Teenage Fanclub's more sedentary moments, but it's something their bassist Gerard Love has achieved with his new Lightships project. Roping in pals from his day job, as well as from The Pastels and Belle and Sebastian, Electric Cables is gentler than a sleepy spring lamb - and maybe just as sweet.

There's little variation from the basic formula of 70s-inspired acoustic pop, with occasional flourishes of flute and piano to add to the overarching sense of pastoral calm, all tethered by Love's unmistakable ethereal tones. Long-time admirers of the entire Fannies ouvre will welcome Love's return to the fray; others may find a whole album a little too nice to take all at once.
