Katherine Jenkins - Daydream
Oh, Katherine! Where did it all go wrong? The poster girl of Brit Op offers up another tastefully curated collection of both the operatic and the popular. Less an exercise in reinvention or artful ambition and more, let's be honest, a commercial placement intended to nudge the classics closer to the masses without being too scarily high brow. That not a problem in itself but in execution it comes over as a little directionless.
Daydream weakens its case slightly by playing to the crowd. It soars on occasion and Jenkins is a compelling soloist with the right material but its high spots (Ennio Morricone's breathtaking aria 'L'Alba Verra') pale beside too much safe stodge.
