Kassidy - The Rubbergum EP Vol. 3

Another superior slice of folk rock from Scottish four-piece Kassidy and the only disappointment is that it's only an EP and not a full-length release. Named after the studios they recorded it in, The Rubbergum EP is now in its third volume but the quality shows no sign of slipping. Stand out track honour goes to 'That Old Song' with its ominous deep vocal and slow pace that finally descends into all-out Western territory with an old-school barrage of whistles that should really be soundtracking a duel, but there's also not a duff track among the five on display. It's the variety that impresses most as it would be almost too easy with the current burst of mainstream folk acts, such as Mumford & Sons, to release a by-the-numbers collection of folk for mainstream appeal and Kassidy fortunately go in the completely other direction. The a cappella 'The Next Move On', which is really just the band showing off like a cyclist would with a "look, no hands!" approach, is a perfect example of this variation and you won't want it to end. With such a strong series of EPs, the worry is that any band's debut album when it comes can only be a disappointment; somehow, we think that Kassidy won't be guilty of that.
