Guards - In Guards We Trust

Check behind your couch. Someone, somewhere is importing a seemingly endless supply of Stateside-sourced slacker pop with Guards just the next in a convoy of tousled-haired young men intent on winning hearts and minds. In Guards We Trust gets a UK release a couple of months after a moderately well-received domestic edition and, if you have an appetite for more of this stuff, rest assured they do it pretty well - without ever really convincing as to why you should choose them over any of their sonic brethren.

All the genre staples are here: plenty of reverb; a solid, rhythmic garage band base, some fuzzy guitars topped with unthreatening vocals. It's Pains of Being ..., Best Coast, The Drums, Flaming Lips with hints of MGMT around the edges. Yet despite all that, it's hard not to be won over, especially now that the sun has broken cover and we're all in the mood for something a bit brighter. As is often the case, there are no highlights per se, although a couple of numbers ('Can't Repair', 'Nightmare') have an indie soul edge that at least distinguishes them from the other, rather same-y material. Give the uplifting 'Ready To Go' a spin and decide if Guards have earned your trust.
