Grant Hart - The Argument

While his erstwhile Hüsker Dü bandmate Bob Mould was receiving plaudits for last year’s mighty fine Silver Age, Grant Hart was beavering away on his interpretation of Milton’s Paradise Lost. The result is the equally epic The Argument. Occasionally brilliant, occasionally baffling and more than occasionally utterly bonkers, this is an album that, although unlikely to bring in new admirers, is a fine addition to the canon of a maverick artist unafraid to take risks.

There are some fine individual moments with the sinister title track, the weird music hall banjo of ‘Underneath The Apple Tree’ and straight-ahead rockers ‘Morningstar’ and ‘Glorious’ being the pick of the bunch. It does fall flat in places but the sheer scale and grandeur of the lovingly crafted narrative will keep you enthralled. As a result, this is that most unusual of modern albums: one that begs to be experienced in one long sitting.
