Gentleman's Pistols - At Her Majesty's Pleasure

You can always rely on Rise Above to deliver a hefty slab of retro, riff-heavy metal and the new album from Gentleman’s Pistols is no different. Taking cues from their heavy forefathers like Deep Purple and Rainbow, but with a pleasingly Southern-rock tinge, At Her Majesty’s Pleasure is a hell of a lot of fun. ‘Living With Sin’ wastes no time, ripping straight into a tasty guitar solo and a head-banging chorus while ‘Comfortable Crazy’ gallops along to a dirty groove that suits James Atkinson’s voice brilliantly. There’s a certain feeling of Clutch to tracks like ‘Your Majesty’ and ‘The Ravisher’ which can be no bad thing, bringing the same sense of melody and inventiveness to their music. This is heavy rock with no pretensions - just plenty of guts, guitars and swagger. You’ll probably find it hard not to dust off the old air-guitar for this one.
