Evans The Death

It's rather comforting to be presented with a British indie guitar act that fits that general definition, without having to complicate matters by throwing in all manner of more esoteric influences. This debut from literate five-piece Evans The Death will fill all kinds of Echobelly or Catatonia-shaped pieces in the jigsaw of your listening habits; unadventurous perhaps, but enjoyable enough to inspire repeat visits.

Katherine Whitaker's vocals definitely have an air of Sonya Madden about them, while lead guitarist - and main songwriter - Dan Moss understands the formula, mixing more rocking numbers ('Telling Lies'; the pummeling debut single 'Threads') with standard quiet/loud dynamics ('Morning Voice') to a satisfactory end. Scholars of the genre may just have found their favourite new band.
