Darktown Jubilee - The World, The Flesh & The Devil

The World, The Flesh & The Devil from Manchester band Darktown Jubilee is a rather pleasing collection of middle of the road radio-friendly rock. Inspired by widescreen acts like The Killers and Bruce Springsteen, these 12 songs roar out of the speakers like a fun road-trip mixtape. Though there is not much here that is earth-shatteringly original, David Boardman's earnest vocals coupled with the straightforward production that showcases the top-notch musicianship, gives the tunes an added edge.

Songs like album opener 'Breakdown' and 'Stop! Look Around' are mid-tempo rockers that I suspect need the urgency of the live set to really come alive, while 'The Great Escape' and 'We'll Take This Town Together' are pretty enough power ballads if a bit on the schmaltzy side. The big highlight is the moody 'When You're Wrong' which builds slowly and really shows off Boardman's fine voice. All in all this debut is an impressive start for this up-and-coming outfit. Good luck to them!
