Asva - Presences Of Absences

Asva have never rushed things when it has come to their music, although it is still a bit of a shock as to just how mellow they have become on third album Presences Of Absences. The band have already shown an inclination to move away from the thunderous guitar drones in which various members of Asva were instrumental in proliferating, but a complete abandonment of six strings was not to be expected. What we are treated to instead is an hour of synths and bass weaving masterfully around the sparse, intelligent drumming to create a beautiful yet deeply sorrowful record. This is still very much a heavy album but weighed down this time by an ethereal sense of despondency and loss rather than the usual anger and distorted guitars. The high pitched, whispered vocals that haunt the listener might not be to everyone’s taste but they add deliciously to the ghostly atmosphere Asva so magically exude throughout Presences Of Absences. A triumph in melancholic elegance.
