Arch / Matheos - Sympathetic Resonance

Sympathetic Resonance might well be the first release under the moniker Arch / Matheos, but given that these two first worked together nearly thirty years ago, it is hardly a new adventure; what is effectively the new Fates Warning album (much of the material was written as such), it still manages to be so much more. The whole record rocks with a vigour and freshness that is missing from many of their nu-prog contempories, merged with some deft songwriting Jim Matheos has honed with his O.S.I. project; even the three epic tracks don't suffer from feelings of bloated self-indulgence that are so prevalent in the genre as they fly along at breakneck pace.

John Arch's unique vocal style does take some getting used to but after a few listens to the likes of personal favourite 'Stained Glass Sky', it would be inconceivable with anyone else behind the microphone; and with the rest of Fates Warning acting as backing band, there is no shortage of musical prowess on show from front to back. As much as this will keep diehard fans happy, Sympathetic Resonance deserves to be welcomed by the wider prog audience, nay, even across the general rock spectrum; this is a shining example of supreme craftsmanship.
