Anders and Kendall - Wild Chorus

Taking time out from their respective full-time bands, Varnaline and Mascott, Anders Parker and Kendall Meade add to the micro-genre of ‘gravelly voiced male + blonde chanteuse’: think Nancy & Lee, Lanegan & Campbell, Linkous & Persson. In fact, it’s the latter duo they most resemble (both Parker and Meade having worked with the late Mark Linkous’s Sparklehorse). Furthermore, Linkous’s former band mate Scott Minor was hired as producer on Wild Chorus.

Minor’s analogue production is warm and full, if lacking the sonic experimentation of his former band. Instead, Americana tropes like steel guitars and Wurlitzer tastefully complement Anders & Kendall’s sun-baked harmonies, most notably on the Sonny and Cher-go-country opener ‘We’re on Fire, Babe’ and reverb-soaked ballad ‘Oh, Love’. Highlight is ‘Let’s Get Lost’, the album’s most inventive moment, where the duo’s countermelodies sit atop droning folk guitar, Morse-code feedback and bubbling Mellotron.
