British Album Sales Hit Record High

British album sales have hit a record high for the second year in a row.

A total of 163.4m albums were sold in 2004, an increase of 2.6%. There were 5.7m tracks downloaded from legal sites - overtaking singles for the first time. Singles sales slumped by 14.2% to 5.5m according to BPI figures.

The top-selling download for 2004 was 'Vertigo' by U2. The top-selling single for 2004 was 'Do They Know It's Christmas' by Band Aid 20.

BPI boss Peter Jamieson said: "The investment by UK record companies in new British music is paying off, despite huge competition for consumer spending."
