MOBO award-winner Bebel Gilberto releases her new single ‘Aganjú’/‘Winter’ on November 1 through Atlantic/Crammed Discs. ‘Aganjú’, a rhythmic paean to the divinity Xangó, was written by Carlinhos Brown and features Bebel’s mother, Miúcha, on backing vocals. The release includes remixes by Commix and Spiritual South. ‘Winter’ is a collaboration with Marius de Vries and Didi Gutman. This is the second single to be taken from Bebel’s acclaimed, best-selling new album, Bebel Gilberto, which was released in June. To coincide with the release, Bebel Gilberto will play five dates in the UK, beginning in Manchester on October 15 and ending in Coventry on October 20. The tour includes a night at the Hammersmith Apollo in London on October 16, and follows a sold out performance at London’s Somerset House in July this year. Bebel won the 2004 MOBO Award for ‘Best world music act’, and performed ‘Aganjú’ at the event.

Of the new album, The Times proclaimed, ‘A record of utterly seductive beauty. There’s no doubt that Bebel Gilberto has made the summer’s most fragrant soundtrack and quite possibly the biggest world music crossover album since Buena Vista Social Club,’ while MOJO described it as, ‘Another rich balm for the senses. Splendid.’ ‘It’s perfection epitomized and heaven on earth,’ wrote Blues & Soul, who made it ‘Album of the week’. This album is the follow-up to her critically acclaimed, best-selling debut Tanto Tempo, which is now one of the most globally successful albums of Brazilian music ever, having sold more than one million copies worldwide and reaching Gold sales status in the UK. The new album was recorded between New York, London, Rio de Janeiro and Salvador with Marius de Vries, Guy Sigsworth and Pascal Gabriel.

Described by In Style as, ‘Brazilian music’s hottest star,’ and by The Times as, ‘The new queen of bossa,’ Bebel Gilberto is ‘The new girl from Ipanema,’ according to Vogue, Blues & Soul’s ‘Ultimate summer delight,’ and ‘A class above the rest’ in DJ’s eyes. As the daughter of João Gilberto, the creator of bossa nova, Bebel was always going to have to work hard at forging a solo career. Her mother, Miúcha, is a well known singer. Her uncle Chico Buarque is one of Brazil’s first pop stars. Brazilians expected great things of Bebel, who made her recording debut at the age of seven on one of her mother’s records, and appeared live at New York’s Carnegie Hall (alongside Miúcha and jazz legend Stan Getz) at the age of nine. In 1991 she left Rio for her birthplace, New York. She fine-tuned her musical vision, worked with the likes of David Byrne, Thievery Corporation and Deee-Lite’s Towa Tei, brought the bossa nova sound to the metropolis’ dance floors, and created Tanto Tempo with the late lamented production genius Suba. Critical acclaim for Tanto Tempo was both widespread and ecstatic. ‘The epitome of cool,’ proclaimed MOJO. ‘Tanto Tempo already has the unmistakable aura of a classic,’ wrote the Sunday Times. The Daily Mail praised it for mixing ‘Bossa nova and smooth electronics in a fresh and fascinating way,’ while Q rated it ‘Excellent’.
