After hearing Small Black's "Despicable Dogs" late last summer, we realized the song was scratching an itch we weren't even aware we had. It became a late summer anthem for a number of us here in the office. Not surprisingly, the song also accounted for one of the years most visually stunning and achingly sentimental music videos. The star of the video is lead singer Josh Kolenik's Uncle Matt, whose attic served as the AllSpark for the Small Black EP that Josh and longtime friend/collaborator Ryan Heyner self-released last October. We picked up a copy for ourselves and were completely mesmerized. Soon after hearing the EP, we got all Veruca Salt and HAD to have them. Thankfully, the band were into the idea too.
We couldn't be more excited to welcome Small Black to the Jagjaguwar family. On April 26 we will release a remixed, remastered and expanded version of the Small Black EP. The EP will feature the original five songs as well as two new ones: "Kings of Animals" and "Baby Bird Pt. 2". Small Black has also added two new permanent members, Juan Pieczanski on bass and Jeff Curtin on drums.
