Everybody’s talkin’ about The Smokin’ Barrels
Prominent tongues are wagging already; Noel Gallagher has tipped them in the NME: “They’ve got something. It’s a bit like Kasabian, a bit like Oasis…What’s not to like?” And who would dare argue with the godfather of Britpop?
Kasabian are also rallying their cause; The Smokin’ Barrels supported the band at Tyneside’s Metro Radio Arena, plucked from hundreds of other hopefuls. Liam Gallagher’s on their side too; they played in front of the Oasis man at his Pretty Green store in Manchester last year.
All this bodes pretty well for a band who revere said rock and roll titans and who are all set to release their Mindless Self Indulgence EP on February 26th. It’s written in the stars.
This self-trained three-piece – high school friends Chris Dawson, Craig Redpath and Josh Dixon – make ferocious indie propelled by earthquake-inducing bass lines and eddying hooks spun by “digits quicker than an East End pickpocket.” Their words, not ours.
After playing Wireless last summer, they’re poised for more festival action this year and are of course eager to tour the world. This trio of friends who shoot from the hip are no longer the north-east’s best kept secret and are about to tilt the indie world on its axis
