Calling all aspiring rappers

A slight detour from our usual music news to highlight this competition sponsored by cheese brands Cathedral City (Dairy Crest) and Wyke Farms!

IT’S A RAP! Could YOU be a Champion at this Year’s Frome Cheese Show?

Are YOU the South West’s answer to Jay-Z? Can you rap better than Nicki Minaj? Could you give N-Dubz a run for their money? Now’s your chance to prove it...!

Whether you’re a solo rapper or a group (friends, business colleagues or family), here’s your opportunity to showcase your musical talent and flair with words about one of the nation’s favourite foods - cheese!

The Global Cheese Awards, as part of the Frome Agricultural and Cheese Show, have got together with the UK’s leading cheddar brands, Cathedral City (Dairy Crest) and Wyke Farms, to find the first ever Cheese Rap Champion to perform an original rap at this year’s Show on the 8th September.

All you have to do is to submit a 40-60 second audio clip of your rap via email to this address. The rap must include the words ‘Cheese’, ‘Frome Cheese Show’, ‘Global Cheese Awards’, ‘Cathedral City’ and ‘Wyke Farms’.

And, there are some great prizes up for grabs. Not only will finalists battle it out on stage at the Frome Cheese Show on September 8, but the winning rapper(s) will win the opportunity to record their track in a recording studio AND a luxury hamper of cheese for all participants in their group.

The competition is fronted by 22 year old Ren Turnock, who will also be joining the judging panel. Ren, who lives and works in Wincanton as a trainee manager for Wyke Farms, the UK’s largest independent cheese producer and milk processor, has long been a fan of a rap (his favourite rapper is Ludacris). Ren launched his own amateur rapping career through the famed Yeo Valley Rap adverts, in which he starred.

Ren says:

“Rap music isn’t just about cities and gangs – if you’re talented you can rap about anything! We saw what happened when farmers rapped about yoghurt – it became a national talking point. Now let’s see what the public can do with cheese!”

Mark Evans of Dairy Crest, which has a significant presence in Frome (employing over 200 workers), where it packages the nation’s favourite cheddar brand, says:

“This is an opportunity for schools, youth clubs, families, business and individuals to show just how creative the West Country can be, and brings cheese right into the homes to appeal to all ages as a bit of fun. We can’t wait to see what Frome and Somerset has to offer. Good luck!”

The competition is open to individuals and groups (max 4) and entries close on 20 July 2012.

Nigel Pooley, Chair of the Global Cheese Awards and Wyke Farms’ own Group Technical Manager says:

“The Frome Cheese Show is the oldest of its kind in the UK and is more popular than ever. This is down to the commitment of the organizers’ who work hard to engage the public, and keep the Show fresh.

“The Cheese Rap competition is part of this commitment, and we hope that everyone, the young and the young at heart, from across the region will enjoy getting involved.

“We wish all entrants the very best of luck”
