Blog: HMV and the high street's last whimper

We wake up to the news that HMV will today appoint administrators to oversee its future - if it has one.

Your Twitter and news feeds will no doubt be full of anecdotes and people pointing out what went 'wrong' with the troubled chain. If you can no longer remember when you last bought an album there, you'll will have your own ideas why this might be. Some, it appears, are even glad that HMV's days are numbered, seeing this as payback for years of over-inflated pricing and senior management incompetence.

We hope that the bean counters find some kind of solution that keeps Nipper The Dog on the high street. We recognise the importance to the music industry of having a presence where most people still do their shopping and for our favourite labels and artists to have a mainstream outlet away from back street indies and mail order outfits. (If the chain goes under at least music fans may still have a local indie to browse; aficionados of more esoteric film may be cast adrift completely.)

Is it an empty gesture to suggest you spend your lunch hour nosing around your local branch and buying something? Take a colleague who hasn't been for a while. Or, if you'd prefer, pop into your local indie and support them instead. Either way, prove you want music retail to survive.

We need your help

Running a website like The Digital Fix - especially one with over 20 years of content and an active community - costs lots of money and we need your help. As advertising income for independent sites continues to contract we are looking at other ways of supporting the site hosting and paying for content.

You can help us by using the links on The Digital Fix to buy your films, games and music and we ask that you try to avoid blocking our ads if you can. You can also help directly for just a few pennies per day via our Patreon - and you can even pay to have ads removed from the site entirely.
