Lissie - Century Soho, London
In the swanky yet sweaty confines of Century Soho, Lissie is taking a shot of tequila directly from the bottle. It’s not even 8pm. Album showcase or not, the American is here to have fun. And we don’t necessarily need the alcohol to join in the party.
Tonight’s primarily about previewing new album Back To Forever and while an industry-heavy crowd leads to a somewhat reserved vibe (despite pockets of determined enthusiasm), the performance is anything but. Throwing herself into the new efforts, all half-windmill posturing and endless jumping, it’s almost exhausting to watch but ensures she hasn’t lost any of that magnetic on-stage presence in the three years since Catching A Tiger.
Hinting at a rockier direction but excelling with the slower efforts, the tracks showcased tonight are highly promising. Oddly, just four tracks from the album get an airing (including current single ‘Further Away (Romance Police)’ but not lead single ‘Shameless’). It’s ‘They All Want You’ that steals the night. A perfect soundtrack to any scene of romantic longing, the lyrics are relatively simple but the overall impact is devastatingly gorgeous. It’s a future single for sure. With the rest of the 45-minute set taken up by a track yet to find itself on either album (‘Shroud’) and slices from her debut, it’s left to the rock-out climactic combo of ‘In Sleep’ and Kid Cudi cover ‘Pursuit Of Happiness’ to get the otherwise static audience subtly headbanging and end the night on a high.
With the album recently pushed back to an October release, tonight provided little more than a tantalising glimpse, albeit a strong one. As with many artists beforehand, three (years) could prove to be the magic number for Lissie and if this showcase proved anything, it’s that she’s back with a bang. And a shot.
