Joe Satriani - Hammersmith Apollo, London

Earlier this month Joe Satriani’s 14th studio album, Black Swans and Wormhole Wizards was released in the UK and this supporting tour was much anticipated by long-time Sat-heads, evidenced by the ridiculous prices touts were commanding outside the venue.

Satriani appeared on stage with his signature red Ibanez JS series guitar, instantly breaking into 'Ice 9' from his legendary album Surfing With the Alien. Older songs from Not Of This Earth and Flying In A Blue Dream were well received, as was 'Premonition' from his latest work.

He talked of how playing live allowed him to get lost in the music and how sometimes inspiration for new tracks came during dreams, playing 'Dream Song' to prove the point! Looking around the Apollo everyone was glued to the front and captivated by his skills and performance. Before he even got the chance to finish a song there were claps and cheers of appreciation from his loyal fanbase.

Although not to everyone's taste, Satriani continues to dazzle and the audience tonight were one in appreciation of his undoubted skill and creativity. Let's hope he returns soon.
