Evolution Weekender 2011 - Sunday - A Review In Pictures - Newcastle

Newcastle's Evolution Weekender takes place down by the City's Quayside, with bands performing over three stages.

My second visit of the Weekend to Evolution was slightly truncated , missing the last two acts on the Spillers Stage but there was still plenty of opportunity to take in a host of decent performances while I was there.

My day started over at the Ballast Hills arena listening to Liverpudlian singer songwriter Delta Maid, really appreciating her take on American Blues music. I'd caught a couple of songs from the singer at last year's T In The Park fest where she on around the same time, playing on a huge stage in really bad weather! I almost didn't get the change to take in my second DM set due to more weather woes as the assembled punters waiting to view her performance had to leave the area for a bit as a smaller tent nearby was in danger of blowing away due to Newcastle's horrendously wicked winds!
Luckily we were all able to return in time for the Liverpool lass's stint, with the Ballast Hills stage also producing top notch performances from New Orleans Country / Folk act Hurray For The Riff Raff and the Leeds based Ellen And The Escapades.

I missed a fair amount of the action over on the main Spillers Stage throughout the afternoon due to enjoying myself in the smaller arena but I returned just in time to catch Darwin Deez bringing the fun (and the sun for brief moments!), delivering synchronised dancing to the masses alongside cheery upbeat Lo-Fi anthems, including the always wonderful "Constellation".

Darwin may have brought a smile to a lot of people's faces during the set but there were a few crowd members not quite as happy down the front, with the excellent hard working security team having a job keeping up with heaps of young kids who found they'd had enough and wanted pulled out. Watching the set from the end of the photo pit I encountered a stream of atendees ( the majority on decent form once removed) getting escorted out from the front, many missing footwear! It was fairly chaotic and it got worse when Top 5 album artiste Example took to the stage. In a way I was glad to be missing Tinie Tempah and Plan B as I imagine things would have got very messy in the photo pit!

That being said the Evolution Weekender was a blast as always, with the Roots based Ballast Hills Stage producing the best moments for me.
