Anneke van Giersbergen - The Borderline, London

Tonight was a night to share with lovers. Anneke van Giersbergen's soaring voice fills this small cavern with such beauty and emotion that I'm sure I see a few grown men wipe away a little tear after the likes of 'Circles' or '1000 Miles Away From You'.

Most of the set is built around this year's Everything Is Changing record, quite probably her best solo album to date, and with 'Feel Alive' and 'Hope, Pray, Dance, Play' amongst others demonstrating a vibrant and rocky approach that is equally suited to Anneke’s vocals this is a majestic and gloriously uplifting experience.

Of course, most people here are because of her time with The Gathering, and the two songs from that period she plays tonight receive the most rapturous of greetings. 'Saturnine' is decidedly heavier than before, and is utterly spine-tingling when the entire audience singing the melody lines for the second half.

A cover of Devin Townsend's 'Hyperdrive', a song she has made her own in part to her stunning rendition on the Addicted album, brings the main set to a close tonight in truly bouncing fashion. But there is just time for the magnificent and energetic 'Witnesses', and everyone is left floating in dreamland.
