The Donnas - Camden Electric Ballroom

The Donnas are looking more and more like a band on the verge of something. That something could either be breakthrough to the mainstream or the collapse into obscurity but based on tonight performance, the smart money must surely be the former. They've managed to pull a large enough crowd anyway, and take to the stage to a rapturous welcome. Musically, they're as simple as it gets - a smattering of AC/DC filtered through Girlschool, to whom they bear more than a passing resemblance. And they're having a fantastic time on that stage, which manages to be contagious. Brett Anderson, on vocals, is a born strutter. It's quite a short set that includes a lot from new album - Gold Medal. Still, no one seems to care that the songs are not that familiar. New songs, like 'I don't want to know (if you don't want me)' go down a storm and probably sound better live than they do on the album. Wearing their influences on their sleeves, think a female, cuddlier version of The Ramones, they manage to make Camden Palace feel like the most intimate of venues and that’s no mean feat. Lively, fast and exciting but way, way too short but it does bode well….
