Kelis, Peaches, Diana Vickers, The Hoosiers - Perez Hilton's One Night In London - Indigo London
One of the highlights of my trip to 2010's SXSW in Austin, Texas was taking in "Queen of all media" Perez Hilton's One Night In Austin on the Saturday evening, where I was dazzled with numerous sets from great artistes. When I discovered late Saturday morning, via a Diana Vickers Tweet, that Perez was holding a London bash at the O2's Indigo venue later that night I didn't hold out much hope of obtaining a pass for the show. Luckily the O2's press dept were very helpful and I was able to attend the event, photo pass in hand.
The evening worked in a similar way to the Austin gig, with photographers based in a small media room photographing an assortment of "Celebs" as they were trooped in, including appearances from Current X Factor champ Joe McElderry and Hollywood rising star Chloe Moretz aka Kick Ass's Hit Girl, currently in town filming a Martin Scorsese movie. The photographers would also pop out to shoot the first two songs from each act when they took to the stage.
The show got off to a great start with the Capital Children's Choir treating the expectant crowd to their interpretations of modern classics, throwing Coldplay and Lady Gaga songs into the mix amongst others. The Hoosiers followed, delivering a handful of their jaunty pop tracks. If truth be told I didn't really have the opportunity to take in much of what was going on musically onstage as I was concentrating on getting my shots then returning to the press area for the next celebrity encounter.
I did hang around for the majority of Diana Vickers set though as I had enjoyed her immensely a few weeks earlier when I caught her performance at London's Scala. Diana's band had the night off so she performed to a backing track, delighting the exuberant crowd, with versions of current single "The boy who murdered love" and Number One smash "Once" the stand-outs of her short set.
Electro pop goddess Peaches followed Miss V, taking to the stage in the strangest outfit I've seen in a while - dressed like a yeti! She slowly disrobed throughout the first couple of songs then proceeded to take a walk through the crowd vai their heads at the start of the third song! I don't know what antics she got up to after that as I returned to the press area but it looked a fun performance from the little I saw.
R & B star Kelis was the final act I caught. She was looking great and sounding just as good so I was very tempted to hang around for the duration of her set. Sadly it was after 1am and I had the offer of a lift home rather than catching the night bus from Greenwich so I dragged myself away from the main arena, also missing out on a DJ set from chart topping Celebrity Big Brother housemate Basshunter.
Perez's first London do seemed a great success so he'll hopefully return to the UK to put on another event.
