Jersey Budd - Manchester Night and Day
Jersey Budd’s show at Manchester’s Night and Day didn’t so much start with a bang but a massive hug and kiss. Despite the lukewarm reception from the mid week crowd the Leicester-born Budd gave it his all, eventually winning over the difficult audience with an inspired set and tireless performance.
Starting off the set with ‘Visions of You’ Jersey treated the crowd to a generous slice of his own brand of classic soul-infused rock. Next up was the title track of his excellent debut album Wonderlands which kept the energy going nicely. New songs ‘Heartbreaker’ and ‘Bright Soul’, with its sha la la’s trailing away like confetti, will remind you of classic Springsteen and Mellencamp, songs by and for working class heroes, rousing anthems belying the fear and vulnerability which runs through them like a shiver.
In no better way is this demonstrated than in the two standout tracks from the album, tonight played back to back; ‘Shotgun Times’ and the glorious ‘She Came Back’, two songs that The Boss himself would be proud to call his own. The Tulsa inspired ‘God Don’t Pay’ and ‘Blind Man’ completed the set.
In these synthy times it’s nice to know that the guitar is alive and kicking. Jersey Budd’s music feels both familiar and refreshing. His seductive whiskey and cigarettes voice meshed with the rousing music and heartfelt lyrics will keep you going during the long dark winter months. So keep an eye out, this ray of sunshine is coming to a town near you. Sha la la!
