"We definitely want to inspire more girls to pick up instruments but we also want to inspire guys, gender is irrelevant to us" Introducing Hannie

Taking their cue from other writer-producer duos friends Hannah and Annie, Hannie, have taken control of their music. Shipping out vocal duties to a set of guest singers the pals look set to take the UK charts by storm. We chatted to them as they released their debut single.

Hey Hannah and Annie, how the devil are you?

Hey, we’re great thanks!  Keeping busy.  How are you?

We're just great too, thanks for asking. What have you been up to today?

So far we’ve been working a new song and doing some more production on it.

How did you guys meet?

We met at ACM (a music Uni) in Guildford, on pretty much the first day actually. We were sitting next to each other when we had to fill out all the induction forms, I didn’t realise Hannah was German and I was wondering who is this muppet and why is she taking so long. Then we happened to be in a class together and just became awesome friends. It helped that we were the only girls on the guitar and keyboard course, we HAD to be friends.

Tell us about your debut single, ‘Cosmic Bound’, in two sentences?

It’s ultimately a feel-good tune, upbeat and written to make you want to dance. It’s all about how some things in life can’t be avoided, whether you want to avoid them or not, you are “Cosmic Bound’ and it’s about accepting that.

I understand that you have guest vocalists on each track, how do you go about choosing them?

Sometimes we’ve worked with someone who we think would fit the song perfectly and ask them if they want to sing it. Other times we wrote the song with the person who is singing it and other times we have the song and are hunting for a singer. In which case we ask friends if they know anyone who they think would suit the song!

And what made Carys Selvey a good choice?

Someone played us one of Carys’ songs and instantly we thought “yes, she’s the girl for Cosmic Bound!’. Her voice was just unique and we loved the tracks she already had released and so we got straight in the studio with her to record.

Kimmy Beatbox is awesome, how did you get to know her?

Yeah Kimmy is super cool! Our friend actually showed her to us on Instagram about a year ago and we thought it would be awesome to do a collab with her, so we messaged her and did some music together.  She’s a really cool kid, we actually just did some writing with her last week.

How do you guys go about writing your songs? What’s your process?

It’s a different process every time and it depends a lot on who we are writing with, but we like to write with a time limit, say, a day. I think we know after that day whether the song is 1.) good, and 2.) for us or not. We like to work snappy, we have ideas and we put them straight down, no faffing, by the end of the day we normally have the song together, then if we love it and want to take it further we get in the studio again to finish it off.

When should we expect to hear more music from you?

Really soon!  We are getting the next single ready to be released and you definitely won’t have to wait very long!

How important is it to you to be two successful females in what is still quite a male-dominated industry?

Female or male, it’s really important for us to be successful in what we do, and success is different for everyone, we just want as many people to hear our music as possible and for it to make people feel good! It is a very male-dominated industry and we don’t want to be heard differently just because we are girls. We definitely want to inspire more girls to pick up instruments but we also want to inspire guys, gender is kind of irrelevant to us. Girls can make it just as far as guys can, there’s just less of us doing it.

What’s your take on the #MeToo movement?

I think it’s great, it’s making people aware and that is a massive step to making change. It’s given people a voice that may not have felt they had before. I do think that there is another side to it which can get risky, with who and what we are believing and being told, the lines are a blur, but that’s another story. Let it continue.

When was the last time you were starstruck?

I don’t think I’ve ever been starstruck, I want to, let me meet Keira Knightley and I’ll tell you.

What’s the deal with touring, are you out on the road? Or planning to be?

We 100% plan to start gigging in the next few months and then hopefully get out on the road! That’s the dream, we want to play as many places as possible. We have a visions of how the show will be and it’s going to be so much fun, we can’t wait!

What’s the question we should have asked you today but haven’t?

Should have asked us “What inanimate object do you wish you could eliminate from existence?” Guess you’ll never know the answer…

Finally, how do you take your coffee?

Annie I don’t drink coffee so much, caffeine messes with me but... milk no sugar.

Hannah I’d swap my beer for a coffee in a heartbeat, and same, milk no sugar, if there’s an option for almond milk I’ll take that.
