Tribes: 'It reflects all the good times we had last year'
Little over a year since Camden four-piece Tribes released their debut album Baby, May 20th sees the release of follow-up Wish To Scream. Produced by Kevin Augunas it was recorded at the iconic Sound City Studio in LA, an opportunity frontman Johnny Lloyd says that was hard to refuse. “We had the songs and wanted to get back on the road,” reflects Lloyd. “When the opportunity to record at Sound City came up, we had to take it.”
Work started on Wish To Scream in March last year and Lloyd believes it is a very different beast to their excellent, at times sombre, debut. “Baby was very nostalgic [whereas] Wish To Scream is about looking forward to a more positive future. I think it reflects all the good times we had last year, nothing but happy memories. It was an amazing time and something I feel proud to have experienced with my best mates,” he explains. So were there any lessons taken from the recording of Baby? “Just to relax in the studio and not rush to get it right.”
Whilst Baby may not have set the charts alight, a succession of savvy live spots (including on the NME Awards Tour) saw them gain a strong following. A mini tour in February this year sold out and following the release of lead single ‘How The Other Half Live’ on March 25th, the four-piece will embark on a 12-date April/May tour, culminating in their biggest show to date at London’s 3000 capacity Roundhouse. “We’re very excited to tour to UK again, with lots of festivals yet to be announced [as well],” says Lloyd.
‘How The Other Half Live’ showcases that Tribes haven’t lost their ear for a killer hook, flavoured with a touch of psychedelia. So does Lloyd believe it when people say that guitar music is a dying breed? “No and it never has been,” states Lloyd. “I hate the way the British press, and especially radio, give guitar music little to no coverage. Guitar music is booming and there are some great new bands this year.”
Wish To Scream is out on May 20th through Island Records, preceded by 'How The Other Half Live' on March 25th. For more information on Tribes and their upcoming tour, visit their official website - tribesband.com
