TMF meets Kyrah
If 2009 was the year of Gaga, then 2010 belongs to another electro starlet, ready and willing to carry on that torch. With the release of her debut single ‘Uh-Oh’ imminent, The Music Fix caught up with new pop sensation Kyrah to chat B & Bs, singing actresses and vodka-fuelled debauchery...
Hello Kyrah! Firstly, how would you describe your sound?
Electro pop with a dark side!
Who would you cite as your main Influences?
There are so many... a few are Madonna, Stevie Nicks, Michael Jackson, Cyndi Lauper, Fergie, Sting...the list goes on!!!
What would you say inspires you?
The universe, cultures, people, spirituality, emotions and of course humour. I like to be able to laugh at myself and try to take things light heartedly
What’s the story behind your new single?
Well there are two meanings behind it. Part of it is about a good friend of mine who enjoys being a bit promiscuous and doesn't care what other people think. Just like Samantha from Sex and the City - a show which is awesome!! The other is a shout out to females. It makes me angry that men can enjoy themselves sexually and get credit for it whilst woman do the same and get called names.
Did you enjoy filming the video for ‘Uh Oh’?
I loved filming the video! It was super gritty, I had come up with the idea for it and I wanted it in a sort of sleazy American style motel so we found this dirty B & B. It was so gross we were just giggling the whole time! And I had a hot model...
What can we expect from your album?
It's fun electro pop. The lyrics can be pretty dark and meaningful on some of the tracks as I had a lot stuff I wanted to say and express and I can be quite dark. But it’s also upbeat and fun and makes you want to sing along and dance.
Which is your favourite song to perform live?
Probably 'Uh Oh' because it’s so fun to dance to and the audience always loves it, especially if they are drunk and horny haha!
How do you feel about comparison between your music and that of acts like Lady Gaga and Ke$ha?
People are always going to compare. I have been writing and performing this kind of music for 8 or 9 years now, so to me that's who I have always been. If they have fun comparing us that's cool - at least they are both really successful. I don't really get either comparison since I don't really 'sing talk' like Ke$ha and Lady Gaga is an amazing, original individual...
You’ve got a very strong look; do you feel this compliments your sound?
Thank you and yes, I am very straightforward, honest and assertive. You can't mess with me - I can be quite scary! I know what I want and I make sure things are done my way. My angry look is pretty frightening! I will have to show you one day - it makes my brother laugh like crazy.
Which current artists do you rate and hate?
Tricky question haha! I currently rate Gaga, Marina, Florence and the Machine, Train, Ellie Goulding, Tinie Tempah and I always rate Britney and Madonna! Hate is a strong word but the artists I think the world could do without are the ones that suddenly decide they want a music career when that's not what they do or are best at like Lindsay Lohan, Heidi Montag, Scarlett Johansson, whom I adore as an actress but singing, really not so much....
We’ve heard through the grapevine you’re no stranger to a Hollywood party, but what’s the best party you’ve ever been to and why?
The best night I have had was when my friend and I started at a Stoli Vodka event and it was in this massive warehouse where they had made colour themed rooms for every flavour, and everything was free... then we showed up at our fav hotspot at the time and it was Hugh Hefner's b-day celebration and open bar again!!! Haha amazing, Lala-Land. I think I saw a million celebrities that night!
Talk us through a day in the life of Kyrah...
It’s not that exciting!!! Well the second I wake up I go to the gym otherwise I won't go! Then I either have dance rehearsals, or practice singing, write or have a bunch of meetings. I like to go to every meeting to make sure things are getting done the right way!
Finally, is there anything you’d like to say to your fans?
I love you guys! My fans have been so so sweet so far, they write me cute empowering messages every day. They fill up the empty space I have where I feel love is needed.
Thanks Kyrah, and best of luck with everything in the future!
Thank You so much !!! xxxx
