TMF meets Don Broco
Home county outfit Don Broco are set to release their single ‘Priorities’ on 13th May, taken from their debut album (also titled Priorities) which is set to drop in the middle of August. The four-piece will be the first act to release an album on Search & Destroy Records – a joint venture between Sony Music and Raw Power Management - and with appearances at the Download and Slam Dunk festivals, alongside a tour in July with Futures, scheduled the future looks so bright we gotta remove our corneas.
With that in mind, we caught up with drummer/vocalist Matt Donnelly to get a sense of what the Don Broco experience is all about.
What's your earliest musical memory?
Probably singing Chesney Hawke’s ‘The One And Only’ at the top of my lungs as a child at a family Christmas gathering. At the time I was convinced those in attendance were smiling and laughing with me although looking back I’m not so sure. Pretty certain my Dad was putting his new Handycam to good use and capturing the moment, let’s hope the footage has been lost. Bloody loved that song.
You seem like particularly handsome gentlemen. Do you have any fashion tips for balding music website editors who are 'back in the game' romantically?
Well, first things first: girls dig bald guys. That’s scientific fact so you’re onto a low maintenance winner if you keep your hair short and team it up with some designer stubble.
Beyond that, like so many things in life, it’s all about presentation so if you know you’re going to be in the company of an alluring female put on anything with a collar on top and anything other than old smelly trainers on the feet. Last but by no means least, make sure you are smelling good. 60% of the time, it works every time.
(Makes note: start having a shower.) You guys are playing Download this year. Help festival virgins pack their bags by telling us your 'Essential Festival Kit'.
1) Deodorant/Aftershave/Mouthwash – See previous question for significance
2) Socks – Number of days at fest x 3 in terms of pairs. You’ll thank us later.
3) Something waterproof – It WILL rain, at some point.
4) Plenty of beer – ‘Nipping’ off site to grab more supplies isn’t as easy as it sounds and will almost definitely result in you missing out on some quality bands.
I think we've found your MP3 player. Anything on there that shouldn't be?
By many peoples standards, undoubtedly. In fact there’s still a playlist on there from the DJ set we did at the Takedown Festival after party in Southampton in March. Anyone who was there will know what I mean. Guilty pleasures o’plenty.
What kind of magic should we expect from your debut album?
It’s pretty magical! We couldn’t be happier with it. It sounds like the purest form of Broco triple distilled and matured in oak barrels. If you liked old Broco we reckon you’re gonna LOVE this, there’s big riffs, big melodies and high energy at every turn but it’s a more mature record all round. We’ve grown as songwriters in the last year and I really think that shines through.
You've opened the fridge and it's empty. Big up the local restaurant or takeaway that saves the day.
I’m almost embarrassed to say it but in that situation like most people I think we grab the Domino’s menu. It just never disappoints.
Oh, but it's so expensive, man! Band fight! Who wins?
Bobby’s got the brawn so he’s taking you out if he lands a decent hit. Si’s got a strong survival instinct so he’ll use virtually any household item to give him an upper hand. Tom is a master negotiator, he’ll be able to talk himself out of any corner. Me? Well I’m one of the world’s finest Chameleons with the ability to seemingly disappear into surroundings before your eyes.
