“Always believe in…dun dun…(Solid) GOLD!”
August. The month of the Special Interview Olympics over in the Swiss Alps. This year, I had my heart pinned on one category, the much hyped Fastest Interview Ever (10 Question Version). I called up my good buddy Zach Coulter from ace Minneapolis funketeers Solid Gold and we flew into town business class. The competition was fierce and there were ugly scenes. One journo from Rolling Stone was sent home on the first day, apparently he was caught injecting himself with metaphors before the Sonic Cathedral Most OTT Album Review hurdles. Crazy fool! But the time is upon us. Me & Zach take our seats, hands clammy, brows furrowed. A whistle blows and we’re off!!
Welcome Solid Gold, for our readers can you please introduce yourselves, tell us the first record you ever bought and your favourite word?
HELLO DEAR READERS. MY NAME IS TARMAK AND I AM LEAD DANCER IN SOLID GOLD. THE FIRST RECORD I BOUGHT WAS A STEVE WINWOOD SINGLE, HIGHER LOVE. MY FAVORITE WORD IS ‘EXPLOSION’.
Can you tell our readers a little about your album Bodies of Water that will entice them to rush out and snap it up?
WE HAVE INSERTED NAKED PHOTOS OF THE BAND IN FIVE SEPARATE COPIES OF THE CD. WE ENDED UP KEEPING FOUR OF THEM OUT OF VANITY, BUT THERE IS ONE STILL OUT THERE!!!!
The album was recorded “on a budget of nothing in apartments, basements, cabins, and farms” – it seems you guys have been tested quite a lot on the road to success! Has it “made you stronger” as they say and are you firm believers in fate?
FATE IS FOR CHILDREN AND RODENTS.
Your music covers a lot of bases and is fiendishly difficult for us journos to describe (“groovy” is popular) – for our readers, who do you consider your spiritual and musical ‘brothers and sisters’?
THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY.
Who or what changed your lives and made you want to pursue a career as musicians? – and what keeps you motivated on rainy days?
THE SHIFTING OF THE COSMOS HAS PLAYED A LARGE PART FOR US. ON RAINY DAYS WE WRESTLE.
British fans have taken Solid Gold to their hearts – do you think the UK and Europe really are more open to new music than the US or do you think it’s purely “a size thing” and word gets around faster in ol’ Blighty?
IT’S DEFINITELY SMALLER AND WITH THE RECENT ADVENT OF THE “INTERNET” IN THE UK, THINGS MOVE EVEN FASTER.
Reading your blog on said interweb, it appeared you had a pretty memorable time at the Iceland Airwaves music festival – looking back now what are your best and worst memories of that time?
CAN’T GO INTO DETAIL OF THE BEST TIMES OF THAT TRIP. WORST WAS GETTING KICKED OUT OF THREE HOTELS.
I’m a massive fan of your fellow Minneapolitan Prince – can you tell me what kind of purple shadow he casts over fellow musicians from MPLS and have you ever played in the hallowed First Avenue ?
HIS SHADOW IS TINY, YET INTENSE LIKE A WILD BIRCH FIRE. AND YES, WE HAVE PLAYED AT 1ST MANY TIMES. ONE OF OUR FAVORITE CLUBS.
You’re pretty “hands-on” with the whole Solid Gold package from designing t-shirts, artwork to hand painting record sleeves – given an unlimited budget what would you add to the Solid Gold range?
WE WILL BUILD THE GOLDEN CITY IN THE NEAR FUTURE!
Finally, our readers have 24 hours to spend in Minneapolis – as our designated tour guides where are you taking us and what are we gonna do?
WE ARE GOING STRAIGHT TO THE PONY RACES AND YOU ARE GONNA HOLD MY BEER AND CHEER ON “BABY’S IN THE SHITTER” FOR SHOW IN THE 7TH.
Hell yeah! Thanks for talking to us today, Solid Gold!
Pah! In the end we were beaten by some journos from Germany’s Fonki Nacht Musik. Curse them and their monosyllabic genius! I pour a pair of large, dry Martinis and try to console my teary companion. I think he maybe got a little dazzled by the lights, the questions and well, the whole pressure of the event. But I pat him on the back and assure him it’s OK and “there’s always next year”. As we travel back in reflective silence we give Solid Gold’s album Bodies of Water a spin and you know what? It’s pretty darn good. Maybe everything IS gonna be OK.
The single Bible Thumper is out now and the album Bodies of Water is due for a UK release this Autumn. Solid Gold on MySpace.
