The first time TDF had a chance to chat with Carly Pearce was ahead of her main stage slot at C2C Country To Country 2019. With the release of the follow-up to her hugely successful debut, Every Little Thing, we had the chance to chat, very briefly, to Carly again. This time we talked Carly Pearce the album.
Hey Carly, so what was it that started this record off?
I just try to think about what’s going on in my life and write these songs and then just fill in the puzzle pieces.
Was it a specific song that started things off for you or had you been writing for a while before it turned into the record?
I’ve been writing. I think it’s the spirit of feeling like I knew who I was, more so than even on the first record, and falling in love, all of those things.
And how was writing this record? You’ve had a lot of success since Every Little Thing, did that impact the kind of things you are writing about and the way you approached it?
I think it’s harder to write your second album, you know. You have so much time to write your first and then you’re so busy with your second, that was challenging but I made it happen.
Did you use songs that you had leftover from Every Little Thing or was this or all new stuff?
And are all the songs inspired by where you are in your life?
Yeah, for sure. I think it’s definitely what’s been going on for the last couple of years. I’ve had some true heart changes and big things happen and I feel like can hear that on the record.
Did you have any specific songs that came more from your life experience?
Yeah, I mean ‘It Won’t Always Be Like This’, for sure. That song, for me, is just really the most personal line is my story to a tee and what I’ve learnt over the last few years.
And so the record’s out today. I know you’re doing a bunch of interviews, but do you get excited on the release day? Go have some drinks later on to celebrate?
Kind of that, if I’m honest. (laughs) But I’ll be celebrating tonight and definitely find time to go buy the album.
Does release day feel like a big day for you because you’ve been living with it for a while by then.
It kind of doesn’t even feel real. But yes, it’s very special.
How does it feel now when you hear your songs on the radio? Are you used to it now or does it still feel kind of cool?
I don’t think you ever get used to that. And if you do there’s something wrong with you.
And what are the deep cuts on the record? The ones that might need a bit more finding?
I think people will really like ‘Lightning In A Bottle’.
OK, and what’s that about?
Wine. (laughs) So of course they’re gonna like it.
That’s the interesting thing, you have quite a few drinking songs, but they’re not really drinking songs.
Yeah, and I think wine has become a part of my brand. I know that fans like the wine stories from me and that when I heard ‘Lightning In A Bottle’, I was very excited because I felt like it was my wine song. For the record.
And what was the process of actually recording the record like?
It was awesome. I did some of it in Nashville, I did some of it in California with busbee. And I just felt a little bit more confident this round. So it was really fun.
What do you do with the studio space? Do you personalize it or do you just use the space as it is?
The only thing I really change in the studio is that I like it to be pretty dark.
So did you turn the lights off and have mood lighting and that sort of thing then?
Yeah, I do.
And does that help with the ambience of what you’re creating on the record?
For me, it does, it just gets me in the right headspace to do the vocal.
You’ve worked with a lot of good writers on the record, how do you choose which songs that make the final tracklist? Is it difficult?
I mean, it’s definitely hard. But once you start finding ones that, you know, are gonna be on the record, it gets easier to fill in the blanks, like a puzzle.
And how important is the tracklisting to you?
I mean, I want people to listen to it in its entirety, but I don’t go into the album wanting to do a concept album or anything like that. They can jump around and I feel like they’ll still get the gist of it.
How was it doing ‘Finish Your Sentences’ with Michael [Ray, Carly’s husband].
I found that through Scott Borchetta and Thomas Rhett and felt like it really embodied where we were at in our relationship when we were making an album. So I just wanted it to have that light, fun, dirty side to it for our first song.
Did you guys record it together or do your part separately?
We did it separately.
So was that something you wanted to do on this record?
Yes, I definitely wanted to do something. I felt like it was really important because he was such a big part of this record.
