Introducing... Kina Grannis
With her second album due out in May, we reckon Kina Grannis is poised to make a big impact this year - our initial listens mark her out as a talent to watch and we're grateful that she was able to take some time to talk to us...
Please introduce yourself to the TDF readership?
Well, hey there! I'm Kina Grannis, I sing and write songs and hail from Los Angeles, CA.
You're about to release your sophomore album - can you tell us a little about it?
My new album Elements comes out this May and I am beyond excited to share it with everyone. When I wrote this album I tried to let myself go to places I've been afraid to go in the past, which led to me writing some of the most vulnerable and honest songs I ever have. I had the great honour of working with Matt Hales of Aqualung as my producer on this album. He completely understood what I was going for sonically and brought so much genius to the production. Elements is definitely my most personal piece of work and I'm so proud of what we created.
Do you have an earliest musical memory? Was there a record or act that made you think 'I want to do this!'?
I have various memories of me lining up my stuffed animals on the staircase and performing for them (I was about six years old at the time). I guess I always had the urge in me.
What influences your music?
Life and all its parts.
If we were to look at your MP3 player, is there anything on there you'd rather we didn't see? Do you have your own stuff on there?
I don't have anything too incriminating on my iPhone, but I do occasionally put on a random dance party mix on Spotify and dance around alone at my house. And no, I never listen to my own music. That would feel very strange. [laughs]
Is there any style of music you just don't get?
If I try hard enough I generally can appreciate any type of music for what it is... but sometimes it takes a little extra effort.
You're currently looking for more exposure - do you have any exciting things coming up?
I'll definitely be working on a lot of music videos for the songs on the new album, which is always exciting. I'm also really looking forward to hitting the road again. It's been a couple years since I did a world tour so I can't wait to get out there and see everyone.
What's the question we should have asked you today?
If anyone wants to know where they can get more Kina... I've been posting a new video every Monday since October in preparation for the new album, so there's plenty of fun stuff on my YouTube channel.
