Latest single 'Mess Around' made it three out of three for Nottingham singer-songwriter Indiana, so with her debut headline shows coming up this week, we thought it was the perfect time to find out more.
Signed to Sony, Indiana has received support from the likes of Zane Lowe and Annie Mac, with her videos racking up over one million views on YouTube to date. 2013 also marked her Glastonbury debut on the BBC Introducing stage, as well as seeing her playing a special show with The Script in front of The Queen to celebrate the opening of the new BBC Broadcasting house.
Big things are expected, so we sat down briefly with Indiana to find out more about her career-to-date.
Introduce yourself to the TMF readership.
Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you.. Indiana Jones! [laughs]
Tell us a bit about your recent single 'Mess Around' - how does it differ to previous outings?
I don't think it does really. I mean, my music isn't all the same and I am influenced by different genres and artists when writing one song to the next but I like to think there's a common thread that ties it all together.
Do you have an earliest musical memory? Was there a record or act that made you think 'I want to do this!'
The first time I ever played live I totally got lost in the moment. This was the first time I'd performed in front of people and I didn't expect it, I was so nervous. Throughout each song I forgot where I was and just like, went in to the song. When it was over I was thrown back into reality and I had all these people looking at me. It was so weird but I knew then it was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
How's the debut album progressing?
Really well. It's a question of picking the final tracks of all I've written and recorded to go on it now. It's hard!
December marks your first debut headline UK shows - what can we expect?
A few new songs. A new band. New hair?
If we were to look at your MP3 player, is there anything on there you'd rather we didn't see? Do you have your own stuff on there?
Yes I do. And I have all my demos and tracks at their very early stages on there. I'd probably rather you skip them!
Is there any style of music you just don't get?
Meaningless conveyor belt pop crap.
What's next on the Indiana agenda?
Gigs. Then Christmas. Time to crack open the Baileys and loosen the belt a few notches ready for the festivities.
What's the question we should have asked you today?
What are you watching... Cartoon Network.
Indiana plays Nottingham's Bodega and London's Electrowerkz on December 4th and 5th, respectively. To find out more, visit her official site - indianathegirl.tumblr.com - or follow her on Twitter - @Indianathegirl
