Introducing: JOHNNYSWIM

Hey Abner, Amanda, can you introduce yourself to our readers?
We are Abner and Amanda! Married couple, duo and parents. Our greatest joy in life is our family and we are lucky enough to travel as a family working the greatest job on earth.

You’re a husband and wife combo, what came first, marriage or music?
Music certainly came before marriage but interest of the romantic variety came before music. That we sounded decent together singing was just a happy accident that let us spend more time together

Does being married make it easier or harder to do what you do?
We don't know any different to be honest. We just think we are the luckiest people on earth to have such great adventures with the one we love most along next to us. I'm sure its not for everyone. But we are babies of the family, and have been used to going with the flow for a long time an getting to work together is just icing on the cake.

What can you tell us about Georgica Pond?
It's a very personal record. Even the recording of it was done at our home in the same room we had our son. We named the record Georgica Pond after writing the title track while on vacation. It was an imporoptu lullaby to our baby but we realized as we continued to write the record that the song encapsulated the theme of the record, which is love, loss, and legacy. To us, it was important to frame the record with that song being the thesis.

You’ve had the reverse geographical journey to a lot of acts these days, you left Nashville. How come?
We love Nashville. We both really got started on our careers their, separately and together. So much like many people trying to pursue their passion, you have to sometimes get some distance to find your identity. We decided to find ourselves somewhere we could sit by the ocean and avoid harsh winters. We still write lots of songs and rehearse in Nashville with our band, so we feel lucky to consider both cities home.

If people could only listen to one song from the album what would you recommend?
That's a tough one, but I think 'Drunks' is a special one right now. It's about unity and passion and leaving a legacy of love. Plus, it's fun to sing along to.

What was your process for writing/choosing songs for the album?
We never really stop writing. We are writers first and in being so often times the only way we can truly process life and its many twist and turns it by writing a song about whatever is it that's going on. When it comes to album time we typically have a chalk board up and write out the songs and ideas we have. We like to try and tell one cohesive story through the album. The chalkboard becomes the ultimate judge of what stays and goes on the album.

What does 2017 hold for you?
A lot of time in Europe we hope! We'll be touring a lot in the US as always and in 2017 are going over the pond for the first time as headliners. We hope to leave a bunch of sold out show in our wake :)

Touring; everyone has to do it. Have you got a place you’ve loved? And hated?
We LOVE touring. There's really only ever been one city we hated. And it shall not be named. Ha ha. Just rest assured that you won't see us there again.

What’s the toughest thing about touring?
SLEEP. After years of touring we still don't sleep well on tour buses; well, sleep and eating right. It's just too tempting most days to NOT have pizza after a show.

And what makes it all worthwhile?
The people! We like to say that we love community and we invite folks into our living room every time they come to a JOHNNYSWIM show. And it's true. But its even more than that. We feel like we get to commune together. It's alive. It's beautiful. And it's because of the people .

You just played London, how were you feeling about that?
It took too long to get there! We're so happy we finally played in London. It was officially our FIRST headlining show in Europe AND our first ever European SOLD OUT SHOW!

You’ve played a lot of the major US chat and breakfast shows, which was your favourite?
We've been so blessed to have had some great experiences, but playing Live with Kelly and Michael was our favorite. We played it twice, and loved getting to spend time with Michael Strahan who is a gem of a human.

If you could only listen to one song this week, what would it be?
'Kenaston' by Chilly Gonzales

Finally, how do you take your coffee? (Or alcohol?)
We like coffee with a little cream, and alcohol with a little lime.

The album, Georgica Pond, is out now. You can find out more about the band on their website.
