“I wanted to make a song where I could make fun of my heartbreak” Introducing Folly Rae

Folly Rae

Hey Folly, how’s your day going so far?

Tiring but fun!

Tiring? What have you been up to today?

I’ve been tucked away in a studio in Acton all day.

So, tell us about you?

I’m Folly 🙂 I write sad songs you can dance too.

What’s the one thing that you’d want people to know about you?

I am not cool.

What does the songwriting “process” look like for you?

My favourite way to work is to start with chords sometimes a beat too and I mumble melodies until the right one sticks and gives me that ‘feeling’ Then we build the track around the melodies and the lyrics come last as they take the longest to do!

Tell us about your recent(ish) EP.

My EP is called Karma Club.

Really loving ‘The One’, what can you tell us about that song?

I wrote this song when I was kinda sick tired of feeling sad. I wanted to make a song where I could make fun of my heartbreak and bring some fun back into my writing.

What’s coming up in 2019?

I’m so excited to release more music (it’s ready to go!) and shows! So many shows and I can’t wait.

As you’ve released an EP so far I wanted to ask where you are with albums; are they a dead format?

I think as long as the songs are good it doesn’t matter if its an album you release or lots of singles. I would love to write an album but maybe its more self-indulgent thing to want to create a piece of art that tells a story in 11 songs instead of one, to me there is something special about that.

Obviously, there’s a lot of talk about equality in general at the moment, what’s your experience of being treated differently as a woman in your industry?

I am surrounded by really great people and if anything, I think they try and protect or shield me from any of that.

Have you noticed a difference over the last few months as #MeToo and #TimesUp gain publicity?

Online, I have seen a bit of a difference, people coming together and supporting each other, sharing stories.  In real life its brought about far more conversations surrounding the topic, I find people are open to talking about it. But in a day to day situation, sadly I haven’t noticed a big change, still the same shit, though maybe I have more of an awareness of it and my tolerance of the ignorant behaviour is even less.

If you could recommend one artist to hear this week, who would it be?

Obsessed with Matt Corby right now.

What’s the question we should have asked you today but haven’t?

How tall are you, everyone usually asks me that 🙂

Finally, how do you take your coffee?

Coconut flat white yum.
