"I love to retweet; don't really get into the tweeting as much. That's a thinking person's game" A chat with Aaron Lee Tasjan

Hey Aaron, how are you doing?

I'm doing well, thanks. A bit underwhelmed by my Spotify discovery playlist this week but otherwise good.

What have you been up to today?

I got up at about 10:30am. Valuable time was immediately spent looking at various apps on my phone...great stuff like emails or finding out if anyone tweeted to me while I was sleeping. A.M. Twitter is the new Christmas morning.

Silver Tears came out in 2016, but if there’s anyone that hasn’t heard it, what can you tell us about it in two sentences?

It sounds as shiny as the awful chemical plastic it's wrapped in makes it look. Also, reverb is great.

If people could only listen to one track from record, which would you suggest? And why?

I like 'Little Movies'. It's hilarious and it sounds like a bedazzled snake.

And what’s your favourite song? (If different from above!)

My favorite song didn't make the album...

I find it hard to pick a favourite track, but if pushed it’s be ‘12 Bar Blues’, how much of that song is based on real life?

A lot of '12 Bar Blues' is real. 11th Street Bar in New York City is on 11th between A and B to this day. Kenny from the song still tends bar there. I've never been to a bar in LA that didn't have a conversation that could have been avoided happening.

Does it rain alot in Memphis? When I was there it was hot as hell.

I don't think I've spent enough consecutive time in Memphis to know how much it rains. You could probably find out by watching the weather channel.

Does how people listen to music these days matter? For example, Spotify not being near CD quality, or people using Apple earbuds which are just horrible. Or are you happy for people to just hear you?

I would never judge anyone for how they listen to their music. It's all valid. Listen and be moved, whatever it takes. Just like when your Mom says "You should eat more prunes."

You seem to be a prolific retweeter, how interesting is social media to you as an artist?

I love to retweet. Don't really get into the tweeting as much. That's a thinking person's game. I'm a great spacer outer. Also, Liam Gallagher is doing it right. Patrick Stewart has strong game as well.

When was the last time you were starstruck?

The last time I was star struck was during the solar eclipse. I wore a suit covered with stars.

Can you tell us the best and the worst thing about your hometown of New Albany?

The best thing was my boss at the New Albany Links golf course when I worked there in High School. His name was Brent Ernsberger. The worst thing was working at New Albany Links golf course when I was in High School.

You’re based in East Nashville now, what’s that like?

It's like living in the Eastern part of Nashville having not originated in the local area but choosing to reside there starting about 4 years ago based on a desperate whim and a few songs that Todd Snider wrote.

I caught a show in The Basement East last year with a killer line-up (Little Bandity, Coco Hames, and Joshua Hedley), do you get out to many shows in Nashville? And if you do, who would you recommend that you’ve seen?

I go to shows whenever I can. Microwave Mountain is great. Also Twen is really good. Lilly Hiatt and Jon Latham and Darrin Bradbury and Brian Wright and Ladies Gun Club and Rayvon Pettis and Ana Joy Harris are ones I dig, too. Brian Wright is probably my favorite songwriter right now.

What’ve you got coming up in 2018?

In 2018 I'm still on tour forever. I'm making a new album with my band. The band includes Brian Wright, Seth Earnest and Tommy Scifres. The album will be produced by Jeff Trott. Other than that, I will smoke more pot than many and write less songs than Ryan Adams. He just wrote one now in the time it took to answer this question.

You spend a lot of time on the road, and you’re playing the Americana UK Awards next week, are you looking forward to it?

I am looking forward to losing the award for Song of the Year to Hurray For The Riff Raff. If they don't win, it's a crime.

What’s the question we should have asked you today but haven’t?

I'll tell you this, the answer to the question you should have asked is "Trousers."

Finally, how do you take your coffee?

When I drink coffee, which is very rarely, I take it in a cup, where it mostly stays.

Aaron is finishing up his UK tour but you can find out more information about him on his website, or like him on Facebook, or follow him on Twitter for copious retweeting. His album, Silver Tears, is out now and available everywhere.
