"I think people should be able to release music however they feel" We chat with Hatchie
Australian singer Harriette Pilbeam, better know as Hatchie, released her debut EP earlier in 2018. After a busy summer and a set of videos released for the EP track, we caught up with Harriette to ask her about music.
Hey Harriette, how’s your day going so far?
My day is going really well!
What have you been up to today?
I ticked a bunch of things off my to-do list - some related to my album, some just annoying chores. It's also a special anniversary with my boyfriend so we went out for a huge breakfast this morning.
How would you introduce yourself to our lovely readers?
I'm trying to figure out how to make music my career so I never have to wait tables again.
What should they expect from your recent EP?
Some fictional and factual stories interwoven with my favourite sounds.
What song of yours is the one you really want people to hear, and why?
I'm not sure if there's one I really want people to hear any more than another, but I think 'Bad Guy' is my favourite commentary on young love.
What’s coming up for you in 2019?
I'll be doing a whole lot of touring around the UK, US and Australia, plus hopefully as many festivals as we can manage. AND I'll be putting out my debut album.
You’ve released an EP so far, where you are with an album; or do you think they’re a dead format?
I think people should be able to release music however they feel. With the way the internet works, it doesn't really matter if it's singles, EPs, albums, mixtapes or whatever else. It all ends up in a neat package online anyways, whether you like it or not, right? I'm halfway through recording my album. I'm actually heading back to Melbourne in a few days to finish it off before Christmas.
You’ve done a few videos for the songs from the EP, which was your favourite to make and why?
The video for 'Sure' was probably my favourite to make because it looked great instantly, with all the TV screens and lights set up in the morning. Sometimes I'm a little uneasy while filming clips because they don't feel like they're coming together on the day, or they look completely different from how I imagined. This one just clicked and surpassed our expectations instantly so the mood was lifted from the get-go.
What’s been your favourite album of 2018 and why?
I could never pick a favourite, mainly because my memory is so terrible that I can't remember what I was listening to over a few weeks ago, but off the top of my head - Beach House, Robyn and Empress Of put out some of my favourites this year. They're each such special albums in their own unique ways, but the production of each one blew me away.
If you could recommend one artist to hear this week, who would it be?
Clea! She's also from Brisbane and she just put out an amazing album TODAY that is definitely going to be one of my favourites.
What’s the question we should have asked you today but haven’t?
Can we buy you a beer?
Finally, how do you take your coffee?
Black, straight to the point.
