Campfire Tales: a chat with Hannah Aldridge

Hannah Aldridge's debut album Razor Wire was released earlier this year to great press, including a 9/10 from our Campfire Tales column. In the midst of a run of UK dates the Nashville / Muscle Shoals native took time out to answer a few questions for us.

Please introduce yourselves to our readers!

Hey! I'm Hannah Aldridge from Muscle Shoals, Alabama. I'm 26 years old and a country singer/songwriter!

Music runs in your family. Can you tell us a little about the influence your family had on your music?

Both of my parents are very musical. My Mom was actually the one who took me to all my piano lessons and helped me with talent shows as a kid. My Dad is country music songwriter. He has influenced me in a lot of ways musically. Not only does he keep the standard high for songs, but he also has driven me to have a great work ethic.

Tell us about your debut album, 'Razor Wire'.

Razor Wire is really much like a diary about the last year of my life. So many tears and heart breaks went into that thing and I think that you can hear that pretty clearly!

‘Parchman’ is a fantastic song. What can you tell us about it?

‘Parchman’ was written by me, Gary Baker, and Greg Barnhill. It is about a woman in a women's prison in Parchman, Mississippi, because she killed her husband. I have been amazed how much that song has really resonated with people.

Another great song from the album is ‘Try’. How did recording that with The 400 Unit come about?

Jason Isbell is from my hometown and him and The 400 Unit run around with the same folks as me. I really wanted to cut one of Jason's songs and when I picked ‘Try’ I realized that The 400 Unit had never actually recorded it so I just asked them if they would. Luckily they said yes!

Is there anyone else you’d like to play with?

Oh gosh! There are so many people I would love to play with: Brandi Carlile, Shooter Jennings, Ryan Adams, Ray LaMontagne, etc. The list goes on and on!

You’ve been gigging hard in the UK over the last couple of weeks. How have you found your time here?

I always really enjoy my time in the UK. People are so warm and welcoming and very eager to talk to me. UK audiences are amazing. Not only are they appreciative, but also very curious about me and my story.

I’ve not been able to catch one of your shows but have read rave reviews. Do you have plans to come back to the UK this year?

Absolutely. I will be back in October for three weeks.

What other artist(s) do you enjoy listening to?

I have such a wide variety in taste but at the moment I am enjoying Lana Del Rey's new record. I also have been listening to The Milk Carton Kids and Dave Rawlings and The Machine.

How do you take your coffee?

Good and strong with a little milk :)

Is there something I should have asked today that I haven’t?

I don't think so! Thank you for the interview!
